Generate CSR on CompleteFTP

The CSR (Certificate Signing Request) is a block of encoded text with your contact data. You must submit your CSR to the Certificate Authority when applying for your SSL certificate. Here’s how to generate the CSR on CompleteFTP:

  1. Open the CompleteFTP manager.
  2. Navigate to the Site/Sites panel on the left, and click FTP/FTPS settings.
  3. Under Settings, expand FTP/FTPS > Advanced FTP/FTPS Settings > Security Settings.
  4. Under Security Settings, select Server Certificate (also used in HTTPS) and then to the right expand it by clicking on the three dots “…’’.
  5. In the Server Certificate Window click the Generate a certificate signing request (CSR) link (third from bottom).
  6. A new window will pop-up. Click Ok.
  7. In the Server Certificate Window provide the following details:
  • Server Name/address – specify the FQDN (fully-qualified domain name) you want to secure. For example, yoursite.com
  • Organization – enter the full legal name of your organization. For example, Your Company LLC
  • Department – name the department within your organization requesting the SSL Certificate. For instance, IT. This field is optional.
  • City/Town – enter the city where your business is registered. For instance, Miami
  • State/Province – enter the state where your business is located. For example, Florida
  • Country – enter the two-letter code of your country. For instance, the US.
  1. Double-check the information you’ve entered and click OK.
  2. In the Enter private key password window, set a password for your private key and click OK to generate your CSR and private key.
  3. Save the private key to a secure location on your server.
  4.  Now save the CSR file.
  5. In the Certificate Signing Request Generated window, click OK.

Use a text editor such as Notepad to open the file. Then, copy the text, including the —–BEGIN NEW CERTIFICATE REQUEST—– and —–END NEW CERTIFICATE REQUEST—– tags, and paste it into your vendor’s order form. Wait for the CA to verify your request.

Install an SSL certificate on Complete FTP

After your CA validates your SSL request and sends the installation files to your email inbox, open the ZIP folder, and extract its contents on your local device. Follow the instructions below to complete the installation:

  1. Open the CompleteFTP Manager.
  2. Go to the Site/Sites panel on the left and click the FTP/FTPS settings.
  3. Under Settings, expand FTP/FTPS > Advanced FTP/FTPS Settings > Security Settings.
  4. Under Security Settings, select Server Certificate (also used in HTTPS) and then to the right expand it by clicking on the three dots “…’’.
  5. In the Server Certificate window, click the Import a certificate from a file link. (second from bottom).
  6. In the Importing Certificate window, click Yes. This will overwrite the default certificate.
  7.  Select the certificate file that contains the server certificate
  8. Choose the private key which you generated when you created the CSR file
  9. Enter the password that you set for your private key and click OK.
  10. It’s done! You have successfully installed your SSL certificate on CompleteFTP.

CompleteFTP history and versions

CompleteFTP is a proprietary FTP server for Windows that supports FTP, FTPS, SFTP, SCP, HTTP and HTTPS. Initially created as edtFTPD in 2004, it changed its name to CompleteFTP in 2007.

CompleteFTP’s first version 1.0 was released in October 2008 under a commercial license. Version 7.0 introduced support for clustering, while the 8.0 release added file synchronization and sharing via a client application called CompleteBox.
