Domain Validation (DV) SSL Certificates

A DV SSL certificate is a publicly trusted TLS certificate where the certificate authority verifies one thing: that you control the domain named in the request. A certificate authority is an organization whose root certificates ship inside browsers and operating systems, which is what allows any certificate it signs to be trusted automatically. A self-signed certificate uses the same cryptography but chains to nothing, so browsers reject it. No business paperwork, no phone calls, no legal entity checks.

Encryption strength is identical across DV, OV, and EV certificates. A $7.66 Comodo PositiveSSL protects traffic with the same 256-bit cipher as a premium Extended Validation certificate, signed with SHA-256 over an RSA or ECC key of your choosing. What changes between tiers is the identity information published inside the certificate, not the cryptography securing the connection.

The visible result is straightforward. With a valid domain validated SSL certificate installed, your site loads over HTTPS and the browser treats it as a normal secure connection. Without one, Chrome and Firefox mark the page “Not secure” in the address bar, and forms on it draw active warnings.

Free domain validation certificates exist and they work. What they don’t carry is a warranty, a support desk, or coverage beyond web server TLS.

Coverage differs too: multi-domain products here scale to 250 SAN entries, and email signing needs an S/MIME certificate such as DigiCert Secure Email for Individual, which sits outside what a web server certificate covers.

ACME, the protocol defined in RFC 8555, is what automates issuance and renewal, but some appliances, older load balancers, and locked-down IIS hosts have no ACME client at all, and there the constraint is the client rather than the certificate authority. After you order, you generate a Certificate Signing Request on your server. Our free CSR generator handles this if your hosting panel does not. The CA then asks you to complete Domain Control Validation using one of three methods:

• DNS validation: you publish a CNAME or TXT record containing a random value the CA supplies. The record name is derived from the value, and the nonce is single-use, which is what makes the check meaningful.
• HTTP file validation: you upload a text file the CA provides to /.well-known/pki-validation/ on your web server, and the CA fetches it over plain HTTP.
• Email validation: the CA sends a verification link to one of five approved addresses at the domain: admin@, administrator@, hostmaster@, postmaster@, or webmaster@.

All three tiers produce publicly trusted TLS certificates. What separates them is what the certificate authority checks before issuing.

A few authorities also issue Individual Validation certificates, which verify a named person rather than an organization, making four tiers in the full list rather than three.

Choose a domain validated SSL certificate when your site does not need to publish verified business details. Choose Organization Validation SSL or Extended Validation SSL when it does.

The CA/Browser Forum sets the maximum validity period for publicly trusted SSL/TLS certificates in its Baseline Requirements, the ruleset every publicly trusted CA must follow. Ballot SC-081v3 cuts that maximum in three steps: 200 days from March 15, 2026, 100 days from March 15, 2027, and 47 days from March 15, 2029.

The ballot’s full title is “Introduce Schedule of Reducing Validity and Data Reuse Periods,” and the second half is the one that changes how you work. Proof of domain control can currently be reused for 200 days. That falls to 100 days in 2027 and to 10 days in 2029. From March 2029, a single domain needs roughly 37 validation cycles a year against about 8 certificate renewals.

Buy a three-year DV term today and you receive around 6 certificates across its life. The same term starting in 2027 delivers about 11, and in 2029, about 24. Manual renewal copes with the first number. It does not cope with the third, which is why ACME automation is worth setting up before the 10-day validation window arrives rather than after. Shorter lifespans also lean less on revocation, since OCSP and CRL checks have never worked reliably and a short certificate limits exposure on its own.

A domain validated certificate proves one thing: that whoever requested it controlled the domain at the moment of issue. It says nothing about who that person is, whether a registered business stands behind the site, or whether the site is honest.

Phishing operators understand this. They obtain DV certificates for lookalike domains routinely, and those sites load over HTTPS with no browser warning at all. The old assumption that a padlock meant trustworthy was never accurate, which is part of why Chrome replaced the padlock icon in version 117.

Encryption is not where the difference lies. A DV certificate protects traffic with the same ciphers as OV and EV. What separates the tiers is the identity check behind the certificate, and that is the one thing a visitor cannot verify for themselves.
