Organization Validation (OV) SSL certificates verify both your domain ownership and your company’s legal identity before a certificate authority issues the certificate. Encryption strength is identical across DV, OV, and EV: all use 256-bit encryption. What separates OV is the verified business identity behind it. At SSL Dragon, OV certificates start at $37.33/yr with options from Sectigo, DigiCert, GeoTrust, and GoGetSSL.

What’s Included with Every OV SSL Certificate
Every OV certificate in SSL Dragon’s catalog ships with the same core set of features. Product tiers and brands differ on warranty amounts and site seal design, but the attributes below are standard across the lineup:

Warranty Coverage
Warranty coverage from $50,000 up to over $1.75 million depending on the product tier. The certificate warranty protects end users against losses caused by CA mis-issuance.

99.9% Browser and Device Compatibility
99.9% browser and device compatibility across Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and mobile browsers on iOS and Android. Server-side support covers Apache, Nginx, IIS, Windows, and Linux.

Site Seal
Site seal that displays the CA’s verified confirmation of your organization’s identity. You can embed the dynamic or static seal anywhere on your site as a visible trust signal.

Unlimited Server Licenses
Install the certificate on as many servers as your infrastructure requires under a single license.

Free Reissuance
Free reissuance throughout the subscription period at no extra cost, whether you change servers, lose the private key, or update certificate details.

SHA-2 Encryption
SHA-2 encryption with 2048-bit RSA keys, meeting PCI DSS requirements for merchants handling card data.

SSL Dragon Support
SSL Dragon support for installation, CSR generation, validation questions, and renewals, backed by a 25-day money-back guarantee.
How OV Validation Works
Before ordering, generate a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) on your server with your company name, city, state, and country code. The CA then follows these steps:
Prove domain ownership through a DNS CNAME record, an HTTP file on your server, or email to a pre-approved address (admin@, webmaster@, etc.). WHOIS-based email validation was deprecated in mid-2025 under CA/Browser Forum Ballot SC-80v3.
The CA checks your company name, registration number, and legal status against government databases and business registries.
Your physical address is confirmed through registries or, if registry data is unavailable, a Professional Opinion Letter from a licensed attorney or CPA. The CA also places a callback to a verified phone number from a public directory.
Once all checks pass, the certificate issues. Typical turnaround: 1–3 business days.
A Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) code can shorten approval to under 24 hours, since CAs pull your verified details directly from the global LEI database.
OV vs. DV vs. EV: Which Validation Level Do You Need?
All three validation levels deliver the same 256-bit encryption and HTTPS padlock. The difference is identity verification depth.
- Domain Validation confirms only domain control. Certificates issue in minutes with no paperwork, but anyone can get one, including phishing operators, because no identity check is required.
- Organization Validation adds verified company identity. The CA confirms your business is legally registered and operational before issuing. Phishing operators cannot pass this vetting, which makes OV a practical choice for business websites, online stores, and SaaS platforms. One key distinction: OV is the highest validation level available for wildcard certificates, since the CA/Browser Forum prohibits EV wildcards entirely.
- Extended Validation is the most thorough vetting: the CA verifies legal existence, operational status, and physical address through independent sources. Common among large enterprises and financial institutions, EV takes 1–5 business days at higher pricing.
Who Needs an OV SSL Certificate?
E-commerce stores processing orders and customer accounts benefit from verified business identity without the cost of EV.
Phishing sites routinely obtain DV certificates to display the HTTPS padlock while impersonating legitimate businesses; organization-level vetting separates your store from those fraudulent look-alikes.
For merchants handling card payments, OV also aligns with PCI DSS expectations around authenticated server identity.
SaaS platforms and web applications that store user credentials or sensitive data can display authenticated organization details in the certificate, giving customers a way to verify the operator.
For platforms with multiple subdomains, an OV wildcard covers them all under a single installation.
Nonprofits, educational institutions, and government contractors often face compliance or partner requirements that call for more than domain-only validation.
Corporate intranets where identity verification matters, even on non-public-facing certificates, also fit the OV use case. Single-domain, wildcard, and multi-domain OV options cover any network topology.
Organizations needing wildcard or multi-domain coverage with business authentication have one option: OV.

OV Certificate Lifespans: The 47-Day Change
The CA/Browser Forum approved Ballot SC-081v3, phasing down maximum SSL/TLS certificate lifespans:
- March 15, 2026 (already in effect): maximum validity dropped from 398 days to 200 days
- March 2027: drops to 100 days
- March 2029: drops to 47 days
Shorter lifespans mean more frequent reissuance, but your organization’s validation data can be reused for up to 398 days, so you won’t repeat the full vetting each time. Domain control verification is required at every reissuance cycle.
Multi-year subscription plans from SSL Dragon lock in current pricing with free reissuance at every cycle. On the operational side, ACME-based automation handles renewal without manual steps. These lifespan changes apply to public SSL/TLS certificates only, not internal PKI.
Frequently Asked Questions
An OV SSL certificate encrypts data between browser and server while verifying the legal identity of the organization operating the website. Visitors can view the verified company name by clicking the padlock and inspecting certificate details.

Typically 1–3 business days. Organizations with a LEI code often clear validation in under 24 hours.

No. Every SSL/TLS certificate uses the same 256-bit encryption regardless of validation level. OV differs from DV in identity verification, not encryption strength.

Yes. OV is the highest validation level available for wildcards because EV does not support them. The Sectigo OV Wildcard SSL starts at $270/yr and covers your primary domain plus unlimited subdomains.

At SSL Dragon, single-domain OV starts at $37.33/yr (Comodo InstantSSL). Multi-domain OV starts at $76.66/yr. Multi-year plans reduce the per-year cost and include free reissuance.

Maximum validity is now 200 days (as of March 2026), dropping to 100 days in 2027 and 47 days by 2029. Multi-year plans cover the full subscription period with automatic reissuance. See the Lifespans section above for the timeline.
